Do you believe in Mermaids?

I’ve always had a fascination with mermaids and I think it would be really cool if they 17794715existed. The Call of the Deep by Tracy Lane is a thoroughly enjoyable book.   This story is about Mericle, who is a 21-year-old veterinarian student in Fort Collins, CO.  Meri soon learns that she is a princess who was born in the North Atlantic Ocean.  She is finishing up her senior year in college and meets Mat who is a crystal-eyed stranger from the Ocean.

Mat helps Meri learn who she is and that she must go back into the ocean to stop her father the King who is crazy and is trying to take over the entire ocean.  The bad thing is, Mericle has been out of the ocean for 20 years and doesn’t remember anything about living underwater.  Oh, and did I mention she might not get her legs until she is 25?

Weird things start happening to Meri like being able to hear Mat talk to her telepathically.  Men attack Meri and her best friend Kelsey while on a trip to Los Angeles.  Men who are soldiers for the King hunting for Meri to take her back to the ocean.  This prompts Meri to explain to Kelsey what is going on and Kelsey shockingly believes her.

Meri also is falling for Jeff.  They have such a strong connection and she doesn’t understand why.  Right after they share a passionate kiss at a party, Jeff disappears without a word.  While he is gone, Meri’s tail shows up earlier than it should, which is good because the King is ramping up his craziness.

I found the characters enjoyable, the relationship between Meri and her best friend Kelsey is like sisters.  They are very close and will do anything for each other.  I liked the character Mat, who is a “pure one.”

The characters pulled me into the story, made me want to know what will happen next.  I can’t wait for the sequel.

Book Description:

At the ripe age of 21, happily single Mericle Edwards discovers that her body – her human body – is only a temporary fix.  Born in the Deep as a princess with fins and gills, she was hidden amongst the humans, so her father – a corrupt sea king – could not use her to his advantage, or worse, destroy her in order to keep his position as ruler of a kingdom in the North Atlantic.

A mysterious visit from a crystal-eyed stranger, along with the onset of startling abilities brings Meri to a realization that her life is in for a drastic change.  Expectations are high and duties aren’t taken lightly in the Deep.  Thankfully, Meri’s true form knows exactly what’s expected of it.

With the guidance of her mentor and his unmatched ‘charm’, and a few others along the way, Meri will have to make some tough decisions.  Will she fulfill her dream of becoming a small town veterinarian or give it all up to save a world and a lifestyle she remembers nothing about? Is there someone she’s destined to be with after all?  Will her deadly fear of water be a problem?
