I’m in pain. I’m really sore. No, I wasn’t in an accident or have an injury. I decided to change up my workout routine to shock my body. I know you need to do this once in a while because your body will get used to your regular routine.
I do have a pretty regular routine. I work out five to six days a week on my elliptical machine. I also incorporate walking the dog and hand weights. My Livestrong elliptical machine has about 15 different programs. So every day I pick a different program to mix things up. They have names like muscle builder, strength trainer, Lance climb, Lance Descend, there is even one called Tour de Pain (they aren’t kidding!). I usually set the tension to level five and sometimes seven and then go for a minimum of 30 minutes.
I thought I was mixing my routine up since I did a different program each day. Man was I wrong.
I decided to try one of the routines on Time Warner Cables Exercise on Demand channel. This channel has workout programs that you could purchase on DVD at the store. I really like this channel because there are hundreds of workouts for free.
I decided to try the Jillian Michaels Quick Trouble Zones. The description says “a quick workout to get rid of your trouble zones with TV’s kick-butt trainer, Jillian Michaels. Tackle problem areas with her circuit training formula, combining upper and lower body sculpting moves. Say goodbye to saddlebags, muffin tops and wobbly arms!” It was a 58 minute workout. I needed to be somewhere so I could only do about 30 minutes of the workout.
I’ve done Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred, which is also available on the channel. I forgot that Jillian likes to combine moves. So if you are doing squats, you are also lifting weights. When I do her routines, I notice a difference. Unfortunately after the first time I usually can’t move the next day. Right now, my thighs, gluts and abs hurt. My shoulders are a little sore too. She had me doing squats and shoulder presses at the same time. I feel like we went through 50 of those. It got to the point where I could barely lift my arms.
The soreness has slowly progressed since last night. I’m having a hard time walking up and down the stairs and getting off and on chairs. I might need help putting on my underwear! But I’m going to continue with this workout for the next month and I figure tomorrow morning I should feel better and will be able to get through the entire workout.
After I did the workout, I went to a movie with a friend. I was telling her it targeted trouble zones and she said her trouble zones are from her forehead to her toes. I hear ya!
You stay with one sport and don’t realize that your body adjusts to the routine. If you only run, your legs might look great, but you are doing nothing for your arms. If you play tennis, you can have great arms and legs, but maybe your abs aren’t so good. The elliptical is great for my cardio, legs and kind of good for my arms since there are handles, but does nothing for other parts. That’s why I decided to mix it up. I just forgot mixing it up could hurt a little.
Until next time…enjoy the view from your passenger seat.
